Konkan Railway trail

The Konkan Coast is absolutely beautiful, I have driven down the coast many times but
never have taken the Train. I am looking forward to the tri-state transit with varied terrain.
Lucky to be on the afternoon train so you get to witness the scenery around.

Trail overview

I have to visit Kannur on work, I realised that there are not many buses from Goa to Kerala so I started to look out for Train options. This is my first time on the train travelling the west coast got me excited. Got me an afternoon train gives you enough light time for most of the trip. Typical west coast scenery with the hills, coast rivers and backwaters. There were more than 16 tunnels from Thivim to Mangalore, some of them really long.

The sights along the way were simply spectacular. You get to witness the Goan architecture, lush paddy fields, rivers and stream. Once you enter Karwar in Karnataka you get to see prominent Temples, hints of beaches and the beautiful sunset. I was expecting more with respect to food along the way, not a lot of choices on the train and the stations.

Since this was a Jabalpur to Coimbatore express, the train was filled with people with different cultures. Many conversations on where they are from and with interesting observations during their travel. As a first time experience, it has been great and I would do the Konkan railway trail again.

Places to see en route

The trail starts from Thivim railway station which is really convenient for the people living in North Goa. Travelling south crossing the rives of Mandovi and Zuari rivers, through Majorda and Mandovi. You then enter the state of Karnataka via Karwar, through the towns of Bhatkal, Udupi till Mangalore. Crossing the border to entering Kerala via Kasargod till Kannur.

Pick up some fruits and short eats for your journey.
